For Tēnaka, measuring its positive impact is the cornerstone of their model.

Tēnaka Science is the online portal Tēnaka uses to share monthly data on the growth and the neighbouring marine biodiversity of the coral ecosystems they restore.

Currently, to collect this data, Tēnaka’s field marine biologists need to dive in the restored areas, and go through a visual identification and quantification of fish (butterfly fish, parrotfish…), invertebrates (giant clam, sea urchins…) and mega-fauna (sharks, turtles, rays).
Once they return to land, the data is loaded manually into the Tēnaka Science portal.

Tēnaka would like to automate this data collection process to allow for field marine biologists to spend more time restoring new corals, and less time monitoring already restored areas.
This is where the partnership with Orange Business comes into play.

Tenaka will develop with partners an underwater research station which includes a camera:

The research station and camera will connect with an Orange-provided SIM card to the local mobile network, and will allow for a daily transfer of the pictures to a Microsoft Azure tenant, set up and managed by Orange. The data is routed and secured, from source to destination.

This is a perfect example where Orange’s Evolution Platform, combining the 3 “Cs”: Connectivity, Cloud and Cybersecurity, come together to enable a digitalisation use case.

Once in the cloud, the pictures are analysed with an Artificial Intelligence algorithm, also developed by Orange, which automatically identifies and quantifies as many as 17 different species of fish, invertebrates and megafauna present around the corals.

The diagram below shows the high-level architecture of the solution:

The benefits are multiple:

  • Fully automated end to end data journey, from collection to data visualisation, going through AI-based data analysis, without the need for human intervention. Field local marine biologists can spend all their time restoring new corals.
  • Daily rather than monthly data availability for Tēnaka partners
  • Higher data accuracy, as divers may disrupt the measurement (fish running away).”

Orange’s Evolution Platform, with its partner ecosystem, is able to deliver every brick of the value chain, for the benefit of Tēnaka and its partners:

The Blue Cam prototyping will start in September 2023, development and testing of the full solution will take place between September and February 2024, and deployment in production (in the coral restoration area in Malaysia) will take place in March 2024.
